What Is a Fyke Net?

A fyke net is a type of passive fishing trap made from cylindrical or cone-shaped netting mounted on hoops or rings. Inside the net are several funnel-shaped chambers that allow fish to enter easily but prevent them from escaping.

Fyke nets are usually fixed to the seabed with anchors, stakes or weights, and they are often combined with leader nets that guide fish towards the entrance.

Because fish remain alive inside the trap until it is hauled, this fishing method can allow fishermen to release undersized fish or unwanted species more easily compared to some other fishing methods.

Fyke nets are commonly used in shallow coastal waters, rivers, lakes and estuaries, where they are highly effective for catching species such as eel, cod and shrimp.

Fishing Pots and Traps

Fishing pots are another common form of trap fishing gear, typically used for catching lobster, crab, crayfish and other bottom-dwelling species.

A pot usually consists of a rigid frame covered with netting or mesh panels, with a funnel-shaped entrance that allows the animal to enter but makes it difficult to escape.

These traps are baited and placed on the seabed, where they remain until the fisherman retrieves them. Fishing pots are widely used in both coastal fisheries and offshore fisheries and are valued for their selective and efficient catching method.
